Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub

One of my favourite releases from last year was this November 2nd, 2010 self-titled album from Daniel Lanois new group, Black Dub, featuring the Grammy award-winning producer on guitar, New Orleans drummer Brian Blade, the incendiary, soulful, and impassioned vocals of Belgian born Trixie Whitley (daughter of the late, great Texas bluesman, Chris Whitley), and Louisiana bass player Daryll Johnson. A hodgepodge of “tripped-out soul with flourishes of rock ‘n’ roll and Jamaican dub,” Black Dub’s sound is a paring down to the essentials as only Lanois can dish up and serve out. But don’t just take my word for it, though. Listen to Black Dub’s complete KCRW session on Chris Douridas’ Morning Becomes Eclectic – first broadcast on Wednesday, February 16th, 2011 (above).
